The slimline fluorescent tubes that had been fitted in the original Stirling fittings on each desk had become irreplaceable.
Using special soft-reflectance heads, light from fibres fed through the slender tubes was diverted down onto each study area, generated quiet pools of light the size of an A3 sheet of paper at each work space. Special metal components were designed and used in the manufacture of the fibre to facilitate its passage round bends and along the slender tubes.
Ultra low-noise fans were used in the light sources to minimise any disturbance in this area of silent study.
